Immersion Plateau? [23 Dec 2009|03:42pm]

[lovemedammit]
I've been wanting to post here for quite some time, but the truth is I'm a bit embarrassed.

I seem to have hit some sort of low-level plateau learning Turkish and I would be eternally grateful to anyone who could recommend some materials or - wonder of wonders - new strategies/techniques.

That's not the embarrassing part, though. )

Does anyone have any recommendations? I hate the idea that I'm wasting my time here by not taking advantage of +60 million native speakers!

Japanese Text [22 Dec 2009|08:29pm]

japanese

I'm in the process of finishing a Marudai to give my mother for Christmas and thought I'd find a way to put the word Kumihimo on it in Japanese calligraphy. From what I have read it seems the most appropriate way to do this would be to use the hiragana characters ku-mi-hi-mo which would be rendered like this:

くみひも

Is this correct?

(I'd hate to carefully letter anything offensive on a woodworking piece I've worked so hard on...)

An Odd Question About Safety [22 Dec 2009|06:12pm]

Hello all! This is my first time posting here.

Anyways, a guy I once knew said that he put a drop of mint extract on his girlfriend's clit, and it made her orgasm immediately.

I was just wondering if this was possible and, if it is, is it safe to do that?

I know, an odd question. xD

Mirena update.... [22 Dec 2009|03:19pm]

iud_divas

[sammie622]
Hi Divas!!!!

I got my Mirena inserted in early November while on my period and I finished my monthly course at first I then had an extended period of spotting followed by some soreness and then everything was going great. I had a bit of spotting when I was supposed to get my next period and thought that was it but I was wrong.. A couple days later my period came full force and has been here ever since-cramping, pmsy and all. its now been 2 weeks and I am starting to get a bit frustrated as since I have inserted it I have only not been bleeding for about a week and a half and the cramping has been bad and the bleeding heavy. I am sure many of you have experienced this before and just was wondering when I should start to see things calm down and go back to normal ( I know people say about 3 months but living like this for 3 months would be very tough). When I used to be on HBC like Seasonal where you skip your period I had to go off of it since I experienced too much breakthrough bleeding and always had my period so it didnt end up working out too well. I am looking for some support of others who had the same experience in letting me know that this will pass soon and I can get though this. Thanks Divas :)

Sneaky Makeshift Masturbation [22 Dec 2009|08:08pm]

vaginapagina

[frolicnaked]
I am at my mom's for Christmas, sleeping on the living room couch. I am here for 10 days, all told. And because I'm no longer busting my butt in end-of-semester stress, my sex drive has returned from the grave. (No, it is not a zombie sex drive.) Because of this, it would be kind of nice if I could manage to masturbate some time during this time frame.

Only, I have not enough privacy to do that here. (My mom, yes, is in the room with me now. But she is watching TV, not reading what I type. She would probably notice if I started to jill off, though.) The living room is in the geographic center of a small, sound-carrying house. It is also very visible to other family members getting up in the night. Ain't nothing goes on in this living room but that the whole house knows about it.

So, I am trying to think of ways I can manage this without advertising to the rest of my family, "HAI, AM TOUCHEE TIMEZ NAO!!!" My normal methods of masturbation involve either humping things or vibrators (but not humping vibrators, at least not usually). The vibrator in the living room is, of course, too noisy. Other fun facts, some of which I have only recently discovered:
1) Humping pillows on the couch is also too noisy.

2) The shower is shower-only. There is no handheld shower head, nor is there a traditional bathtub faucet.

3) If I try to masturbate in the shower with my Laya Spot, the hot water runs out before I climax. You can imagine what the introduction of cold water does to my orgasm.

4) Manual stimulation alone -- aka, touching myself quietly under the covers -- does not work for me. I mean, it feels fine, but it's not enough to bring me to orgasm.
Certainly, I can just put on my Big Girl Pants and deal with it until I get back home. But if there's a way for me to get off without alerting the whole house to my self-sexcapades, well, that is preferable.

Your creative input is appreciated.

this is a fallow up to this post.

The large orange cup with a ball stem arrived today (thanks Teresa!) so I put it in and it took me like 10 mins to get it out! ugh. I had no problem with the small bc it was shorter, so i could reach the rim but this one i couldn't reach the rim with bc i couldn't get ahold of the ball to slide it down. those pronounced rings on the bottom REALLY helped me if they weren't there i don't know what i would have done. But now im worried it will happen again. make me feel better! lol

should i try it again before my period starts? (i tried my small when i wasn't on it and i didn't notice a difference.)

New dictionaries :) [22 Dec 2009|11:18pm]

linguaphiles

[mirmarmelade]
As of this afternoon, I'm the proud owner of the electronic Van Dale Dutch/English/French/German large dictionary set! Yay! My uni uses these dictionaries and I love them, they are easy to work with and contain lots of extra information and idiomatic expressions. They have about 115.000 lemmas per language, I believe. I'm so happy! As much fun it is to leaf through my paper dictionaries, these will help me taking less than an hour on a few lines of text and there's something to say for that too :P

(I realize this sounds like a commercial but I'm just so excited! I'd never have bought them for myself because they're quite expensive, but I've been given them by my department as 'salary' for a tutorial I taught last semester. The Board didn't allow them to officially appoint a TA, but the department had the funds to let me choose a gift worth the pay I'd have gotten. I love how the department is doing everything possible to keep the students on their feet while the Board is ripping it all to shreds. No really, how's firing half the Linguistics staff while telling them to add to the curriculum and teach a 3-fold of the current student load a realistic and even good idea?)

Paragard Pregnancy, then miscarriage, continue use? [22 Dec 2009|02:17pm]

iud_divas

[annie3001]
Hi all,

I'm looking for some guidance/experience beyond what my doctor has advised.  I've had a Paragard for 3 years.  Love love love it.  Unfortunately, I recently became pregnant.  A few weeks into the pregnancy, I had a miscarriage.  Phew.  After miscarriage, my doctor ordered an ultrasound to check the position of the IUD.  The ultrasound showed that my IUD is still perfectly in place.  My doctor then advised that I could continue using my IUD for contraception.

Doc said "I've never seen anything like this before, and I think its very unlikely that a pregnancy would occur again".

But, being that I'm the one that's going to have to have the abortion if this thing fails again, I'm finding myself a bit apprehensive about using the IUD as my only method of birth control.  On the other hand, I had my paragard inserted after trying hormonal BC, diaphram, spermacide, condoms...everything.  All have been terrible except the Paragard.  So what else to do?

Has anyone else had a similar experience where they had a pregnancy, but kept the IUD, and found that it worked from there on out?  I've searched far and wide for scientific articles or websites that have studied pregnancy and then continued use with the same IUD, but haven't found anything helpful to my situation.

Thanks!

MY SISTER IS A CONVERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [22 Dec 2009|11:28am]

[ mood | ecstatic ]

So I found out about cups about six months ago and plunged in head first. I think they are awesome. My first finding was the Diva Cup, before I found this wonderful community. I told my sister about it, (shes 18, and away at school in Idaho) and she thought the concept of cups was great. When she came home last week for Christmas break, she asked for a tampon and I said I don't have any but I have your cup...she was a little intimidated at first but later when I wasn't home, she took the plunge!!! She came to me this morning to tell me of her experience. I was overjoyed because I had no idea of her adventure. She said she used it yesterday no problem, her and my mom found Melissa's folding video on youtube and insertion and removal was easy. She said when she wore it last night she thought that it was in right but during the night she had a little bit of leaking, and she was disappointed. She put it back in anyways and is soldiering on. We did a little bit of troubleshooting and I think she didn't have it completely positioned correctly...we'll see what the next few days bring.

I'm so excited for my second convert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joanna Newsom Food [22 Dec 2009|10:57am]

milkeyed_mender

[stephan_nance]
http://seattlest.com/2009/12/18/songs_as_food_from_pink_floyd_to_ed.php

"This year in Sound magazine turned City Arts, 'Dish-Off' challenged chefs at 28 restaurants to create dishes based on songs with food ingredients in the title."

Joanna's "Crab, Clam, Cockle, Cowrie" was interpreted as an Alaskan King crab with tart green apple sorbetto and crab butter powder.

When you think about it, a restaurant's whole menu could easily revolve around Joanna Newsom's lyrics. The results could be controversial if the dishes were based solely on titles... "Monkey & Bear" and "Only Skin" come to mind. But I'm all for sprouts and beans, and there are endless dessert possibilities for "Peach, Plum, Pear"...

Then there is this ridiculous thought I have far too often: "I dreamed you were skipping little scones across the surface of the water..."

Anyway. Happy holidays, menders!
